13. Stuck

I was considering leaving and going to another bar to see if I could have any better luck of getting into the app, but I kept the deal and actually worked as I promised. I just need to do it until the morning comes and I will find my human then. The night was slow. There were only a few more stupid humans that “forgot their phones” or had “It broke” excuse. I sent them away without drama most of the time. Well, I carried one out personally, but otherwise, it was a pretty mundane night. I periodically had to pop in and help the bartender, Nicky, to carry out some vampires. It was harder since I knew most of them. “Common Ar, really, you are now one of those,” Karina told me while I was escorting her out. “I just need another bite.” “Girl, I am helping you. If you killed that human in the bar, they might not let you back in. What is going on with you, anyway?” “I have nothing going on.” “Nothing you want to share?” I asked her. I felt like I had to. Is that what comes with the job? “It’s my pet,” she bawled, crying. “My pet has passed away.” “Did you ... drain him?” “No, how dare you? I took care of my pet. He was 89 years old.” “Wow, that is a long life for a pet. Can you get another one?” “You would not understand!” She stormed out. I understood. Just didn’t expect her to have a human for so long. I had a pet once, too, actually. It was so long ago, and I was young, and she died. It was actually my fault. I was a pretty young vampire myself then. I decided I was not suited to have pets. The morning came, but Redrick was not there. I got his number from Nicky and texted him at least ten times, and even called. No answer, nothing. “He could be bad at replying. He will come through eventually, but it could be a few days.” Nicky shrugged. We both took off after I helped him close the bar. We shared a special tinted Uber as the sun was up and I was not exactly dressed for the daytime. I crashed on my couch and drowned in dreamless sleep. I woke up to the sound of my phone relentlessly beeping. I picked it up, all groggy from my sleep, hoping it was Redrick, but it was Silvia. “Get to the club now!” I was contemplating texting her back, asking what was going on, but decided to check it out instead. It was already dark outside, as I had slept most of the day. It only took me a few minutes to get there. I was hoping to talk to Silvia and get her to tell me about my human. When I got there, George was standing next to the human girl and her boyfriend I talked to yesterday or some resemblance of them. It must have been twenty-four hours. They were still wearing the same clothes. The girl’s face was smeared in mascara. Her face was also very, very wet, but it was not raining. I guess she was sobbing - a human trait. A vampire never cries. We simply don’t have tears. I have heard rumors that someone had shed a tear, but I have never seen it personally. “So what’s up, George? Am I allowed back in?” I asked him. “Are you kidding me? Do you remember these humans?” “Yes, vaguely. Why are they still here?” “Why are they still here? Why? Silvia is so pissed at me because she caught them urinating right in front of the club. She almost let me go. Does it ring a bell?” “Oh, yes, I guess I told them to wait, then I had to go. So why did you call me here?” “I called you here, so I don’t have to drag them off here. Release them!” I freed the humans and told them to get out of there. “So, George, do you think I can have a peak at your app?” “You have the audacity after this.” “Maybe you can call Redrick for...” “No!” Wow, I have not seen him this stern with me before. “Can I at least go inside just to talk to Silvia?” “She explicitly told me she would not be talking to you.” He was not helpful today. Not sure why he was that mad. I guess Silvia was giving him a hard time. I took off. It was getting dark, and the bar was about to open. Maybe I can find Redrick there. I waited and waited, but instead of him, barman Nicky walked through the door. I started to lose hope. Maybe it was not meant to be. I will never find him. Why was I so obsessed? I felt like the cold pliers were gripping my insides. I was glad I didn’t have to breathe, except for the smell. The creator wanted to make sure vampires knew where the blood source was. So, thanks to that, I could also smell some disgusting human perfumes and foods. “Have you heard from Redrick?” I asked Nicky. “Yes.” he looked at me nervously. “He texted me asking you to do another shift.” What the hell? I was irate. I stormed out and went into a few other bars around town. No one would let me use the app. Some vampires were nicer about it than others, but every one of them had some excuse that it was private information. Why were they so special, and I could not get access? I rushed back into Redrick’s bar. I guess I will work another night. When the morning came, Redrick was not there. The next night, I went into the bar again, hoping that he would still show up. He never did. At least I can get some snacks. Nicky told me Redrick asked me to work yet another f** day. I had been helping in this bar for almost a week when, finally, one night, Redrick just walked in as if nothing had happened. I could not contain myself. I ran and grabbed and shook him. He sort of waited a bit for me to calm down, then took my arms off his shoulders and set me on the bar stool. “Sorry, hun, I was too carried away. Were you waiting for me?” “Yes, I have been waiting and working my ass here for almost a week,” “Yes, yes, let me see. What did you want?” “I need help to locate my human that was recently banned by Silvia. Can you give me access to the app?” He quickly clicked something on the phone and handed it to me. I scrolled through thousands of people and their pictures: females, and males. Thanks to my speed, I could do it quickly without losing focus, but I could not find him for a while. What if I never see him, never touch his lips, never taste his blood? Then he was there, right in front of me. He was staring at me from the phone screen. His face was rather sad, with a familiar spark in his eye. It was unbelievable to see him, even on the stupid screen. I was mesmerized looking at him, scrutinizing his features. His shiny dark hair and his lips were begging to be bitten. His eyes… “Ahem, can I have my phone back?” I almost forgot that Redrick was waiting. I took a snapshot and sent it to myself. Then I threw the phone back into Redrick’s hands. I stared at my human again. His name was Daniel York, and there was no address listed for him in the app. Author's note: Join my private VIP group, Mila Dubua - Author on F.a.c.e.b.o.o.k to get updates and private discussions and maybe new chapters preview!
