I have found six Daniel Yorks in the city and even a few more in the nearby suburbs. Only four of them fit the age, though, so that was lucky.
I have set out to visit them all, starting with the closest address.
The first one lived in a house that actually had a doorman. I was wondering if that was really my Daniel. I could not tell. Doormen were easy peasy to deal with, with a bit of glamouring, and I was in the elevator heading to the Daniel. I crossed my fingers. Please, could I be lucky? I rang the doorbell.
The little girl with dark brown hair in a ponytail sticking out, unicorn pajamas, and tiny orange glasses opened the door.
“Are you the delivery person bringing my present?” she asked me. Her little face was so excited and curious.
Did he have a daughter? I knew little about kids, even though I had been around for so long. There was this natural innocence gushing out of her. I guess that’s why even we predators were mostly careful and gentle around these creatures. It would not be a problem. I didn’t expect it. I just never thought of him as a father, but he is human, after all. What would it be like if he had a family? It didn’t occur to me. I remembered that he told me he had no one. Did he lie? Humans tend to do that.
“Is your daddy Daniel Yorks.” I didn’t have to use my magic on her, not yet.
“Yes,” she took a minute to respond.
“Can I see him?”
“Why?” she inquired.
“I need him to sign for it.”
“I can do it. I can write!” She was excited.
“It has to be by someone over 18 years old,” I told her, coming up with excuses on the fly. I was losing my patience.
“Okay,” she said unwillingly. “Daddy, daddy, there is a delivery person with my present, but she needs to talk to you.”
I heard footsteps coming, and I knew it was not him already, but I had to make sure. The guy looked nothing like Daniel. He was extremely tall with curly blond hair and the features of his face had sharp angles. Normally, I would find him attractive for a meal, but not today.
“Make sure to get your girl a present,” I told him, using glamour, and left as quickly as I could. To the wrong Daniel, it looked as if I had blurred and dissolved into thin air.
It was a waste of my time so far, and I rushed to the closest address on my list while the sun was down.
I rang the doorbell.
“Who is this?” I heard a female’s voice.
“Package delivery.” I liked that lie best so far.
The woman opened the door using the safety chain. I slid my foot right into the door gap while staring into her eyes. “Invite me in!”
She had no choice but to let me into her apartment. Would this matter to me if she was his lover or if I preferred she was his sister? The apartment smelled unfamiliar.
“Can I see Daniel?” I asked her while looking around the place. I could see the light wood kitchen table and leather chairs around it. The large mirror was behind me. I noticed that she was looking at it, gaping. But, of course, she could not see my reflection.
“You are not scared of me yet. The mirror is irrelevant.” I glamoured her again. “Take me to Daniel.”
“He is at the hospital on the night shift. I will take you there,” she replied, as she was under my charms.
I imagined Daniel as a doctor. Was he? I could not picture him as one for some reason and still had some trust that he didn’t lie about having a wife. I would not care if he had one, but I didn’t like the lies.
“Do you have his picture?” I asked her. I didn’t want to waste any more time if it was not him again.
The woman quickly showed me a framed collage on the wall. I missed it, even though it was right in front of my face. One picture had a slightly overweight, balding human hugging her. He wasn’t my Daniel. I felt some relief but also disappointment that my search was fruitless. A few of the other images had them kissing and holding hands.
“Give him a good BJ when he gets home,” I was gone from her place, frustrated.
The next place had no one home. I could break the door, but I needed someone to invite me in. The search has been fruitless so far. Frustrated, I decided to return later and swiftly ran to the last place that was located in the city.
I rang the apartment bell and heard a man and woman’s voices arguing. Then the door swung open. The woman in front of me wore a sleeveless, tight-fitted blue cami and red lacy underwear.
The familiar smell of Daniel hit my nostrils, and I was instantly intoxicated by it. A rash of excitement ran through my body. He was close, and I knew it. I have located my human. Mine! The images of what I would do to him took over my mind. I could not believe that I had finally found him. I longed for him. I also was happy and proud! I did it. I earned him. My hard work was not in vain. Then I gazed at the woman looking at me. She was slightly annoyed but curious.
She had a bit of blood sitting in the corner of her mouth, but I didn’t need to see it to know who she was. A fellow vampire! Why was she here? Did he replace me so quickly? What was I thinking? He had no choice in that matter. Did she take him as her pet? I was at a loss for words.
“What do you need?” The woman eyed me, irritated.
